Spring-summer 2023 leather trends on display at PV
Trends experts at Paris-based trade show Premiere Vision have outlined some of the leathers that tanneries will be displaying on the stands between February 8 and 10.
Stretch leathers – vegetable-tanned leathers laminated on a stretch knit – have been developed for garments that adapt to movement.
Tannins in bio-polymers made from olive leaves, a by-product of the agri-food industry, offer circular credentials and grape and beer have been used to tan or colour leathers.
PV said: “It is not only tanning which is revising its compositions, but also finishes. The choice of alternative finishes is expanding to offer skins that have been developed with reduced impacts along the whole production process. Buffing, smoothing or boarding bring suppleness, shine and detail to the surface, or natural finishes with plant-based waxes and oils add softness, and a waxy, buttery texture. Chemical finishes focus on solvent-free, water-based compositions.”
The feel has been updated, with aerated leathers and spongy handles.
PV said there will be technical leathers with extremely smooth varnishes, artificial textures on skins, melting and gelatinous handles. There will be more bright colours, fake primaries and very artificial pastels. “Evoking vinyl and plastic, leathers have also been embossed with very stylised scales to create structured products," said the trade show experts.
