Japanese leather imports and exports up
Tokyo-based Japan Leather and Leather Goods Industries Association (JLIA) recently released year-on-year data for the nation’s leather and leathergoods imports and exports during the month of August.
The figures indicate that the total value of the raw and finished leather imported by Japan for the month increased by 47.7% year on year to ¥1.45 billion or around $12.77 million.
Meanwhile, the country’s total export value for the same products surged by 97.7% on the previous year to reach ¥1.39 billion ($12.2 million).
Imports of leather bags and “other leather products” (excluding footwear) rose by 10.7% on the comparative period to ¥47.36 billion ($417 million), whereas exports of the same category achieved ¥1.29 billion ($11.4 million), representing year-on-year growth of 22.9%.
Leather footwear imports closely followed, with figures for the month totalling ¥44.26 billion ($389.6 million), up 8.9% year on year. Exports of Japanese-made leather footwear saw a climb of 40.2% over August 2020 figures, reaching ¥850 million ($7.5 million).
