National Day sees Hainan sales surge by 122%
China’s national day, celebrated on October 1 every year, led to a 122% year-on-year increase in duty-free sales in the offshore province of Hainan in a single day, according to official figures reported by The Moodie Davitt Report.
Data given by Hainan Provincial Bureau of International Economic Development, cited by the duty-free and travel retail business outlet, suggested that sales reached $26.5 million or ¥171 million.
Added to National Day’s official observation on October 1, another consecutive six days are typically added to the public holiday, resulting in what is known in the country as a “golden week” between October 1 and 7, a key period for travel and consumption.
Boosted sales were also logged during the period leading up to the holidays, the same publication said, with Global Premium Duty Free Plaza (owned by Hainan Development Holdings) experiencing a new daily sales record of over $9.3 million (¥60 million) on September 29.
