Hainan duty-free sales up 257% in H1
The customs agency for Haikou, the capital city of the Chinese island province of Hainan, recently released data which revealed how duty-free shopping sales on Hainan had increased by 257.2% year on year between January and June or the first half of this year (H1).
Sales reached $4.13 billion (or ¥26.77 billion) over the period. Almost 3.9 million travelling shoppers experienced the province’s duty-free touchpoints, up 156.5% on the previous year.
All duty-free product categories, including leathergoods, are expected to be covered by local authorities’ traceable source code measures by year-end, in a bid to curb the rise of grey-market reselling of articles purchased in Hainan.
