Chinese leather: from ‘big’ to ‘powerful’ producer

China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) has published its "guiding opinions" on what it described as the high-quality development of the Chinese leather industry during the country’s 14th five-year plan period (2021-25).

Beyond the specific, industry-level recommendations made throughout the report, CLIA particularly stressed how it would be “critical” for China to make a comprehensive, concerted effort to progress from its well-established role as a “big” leather producer to being known as a “powerful” one.

CLIA said that for the national leather industry to adapt well to evolving market conditions and, ultimately, “win” going forward, it would need to strategically mesh its own objectives with those of the Chinese government, as outlined within the institution’s overarching five-year plan.

Key takeaways included a planned, country-wide repositioning of the industry, with ongoing innovation as its “fundamental” driving force.

Four interlinked themes - survivability, competitiveness, sustainability and readiness for development - were also singled out as part and parcel of the “new vision, new pattern and new mind” that the Communist Party of China, which celebrated its centennial this year, has asked of the Chinese leather industry during its 14th five-year plan period.
