Tannery owner and meat processor JBS Group has moved into aquaculture with the purchase of Australia’s second-largest salmon farming company.

The Brazilian giant has bought Huon, which has vertically integrated operations in Tasmania, for around AU$425million (£226 million).

JBS CEO Gilberto Tomazoni said: “This is a strategic acquisition, which marks the entry of JBS into the aquaculture business. We will repeat what we did previously with poultry, pork and value-added products – to make our portfolio even more complete.”

JBS Couros, the leather division, is made up of 21 manufacturing units and five distribution centres on four continents.
