JBS Couros launches antiviral leather

09/06/2021

Leather manufacturing group JBS Couros has launched a new range of leather with antiviral functionality.

Antiviral technology that the company has called JBS V-Block works by integrating silver microparticles as an additive at the finishing stage. JBS Couros has carried out tests that show V-Block leather to be effective in rendering inactive the SARS-Cov-2 virus, the cause of covid-19.

President of JBS Couros, Guilherme Motta, said there was an additional benefit in using the technology in that it enhances the durability of the leather, making it suitable for use in high-contact applications.

In tests conducted at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of São Paulo, the material showed 99% inactivation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus within 30 minutes.

Nanox, a technology provider specialising in antimicrobials, is the company that developed the additive JBS Couros has used in the V-Block system. Its founder, Daniel Minozzi, said at the time of the launch that the silver microparticles are stabilised by synthesis technology.
