Shanghai Auto Museum hosts leather exhibition
Shanghai Auto Museum is currently hosting a leather art exhibition, Leather universe: an exhibition of Chinese leather culture and art, co-sponsored by the museum and Shanghai Arts and Crafts Vocational College.
170 pieces of work from 30 provinces are currently on display, including works of sculpture, handicraft, and art installations.
In keeping with the exhibition’s venue, automotive leatherworks (such as leather car door panelling) feature prominently, as do bicycle seats and traditional horse-riding saddles used by nomadic peoples. Local media said that the displays “perfectly combine the evolution of modes of travel with the evolution of traditional skills.”
There are also examples of carved lacquer-style patterning on leather, reportedly designed to show what Chinese media suggested are the “infinite possibilities for dialogue between automobiles and art.”
Works from contemporary leather sculptor Bai Yudong, whose work incorporates Harley-Davidson leather elements, are another highlight, local media said.
The exhibition will run until August 22.
