K-pop star Kai collaborates with Gucci in Korean first
South Korean boyband star Kai (pictured), a member of the pop group Exo, is front and centre of a capsule collection with Gucci, inspired by the entertainer and designed by the house’s creative director Alessandro Michele.
Kai, sometimes nicknamed “Human Gucci” by fans, owing to the number of times he has been photographed sporting the brand’s wares, was named global Gucci ambassador in 2019 and was also previously part of the spring-summer 2020 Gucci Eyewear campaign alongside Chinese actress NiNi.
The collection marks the first time the brand has named a capsule for a Korean celebrity.
In a March 2021 interview with Esquire Korea, Kai said of the collaboration: “I am incredibly grateful and just as thrilled. It’s not easy to have a collection with your name. It’s a huge opportunity and an act of fortune, so I’m at a loss for words to describe how happy I am that it came to me.”
Kai x Gucci features ready-to-wear, leathergoods and footwear for both women and men. A teddy bear wearing a blue bow tie is the collection’s most prominent decorative motif.
The accompanying media campaign was shot in Seoul by South Korean photographer Min Hyun-woo and film director Woogie Kim.
