China-Pakistan leather trade and investment seminar held

22/01/2021

China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) and the Consulate General of Pakistan in Shanghai jointly participated in an online China-Pakistan leather industry trade and investment seminar recently, Chinese media have reported.

CLIA secretary general, Chen Zhanguang and deputy consul general for Pakistan in Shanghai, Nawab Ali Rahoojo, both presided over the online conference.

Matters discussed included new product development, improved tannery technologies and production efficiency, leather industry promotion, modes of leathergoods exhibition, personnel issues, Chinese tariffs on Pakistan-made footwear, Pakistani hide prices and specifications, and increased business investment between the two countries.

Since the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement came into effect in 2007, China has reportedly become Pakistan’s largest source of leathergoods, with Chinese imports valued at around $289 million. The East Asian nation is also Pakistan’s second-largest export destination for its own leathergoods, with exports amounting to roughly $55.5 million.

In 2020, China and Pakistan’s Belt and Road Initiative cooperation progressed to its second phase, with a focus on agriculture and manufacturing, including the leather industry.

Chinese media reported that both sides were pleased with the efficacy and targeted nature of the meeting.
