China: 12 ‘leather cities’ across eight provinces to link via cloud

China is set to gradually roll out a government supported trans-provincial, internet-based administration network of 12 “leather cities” (including Haining, Zhejiang and Harbin, Heilongjiang) across eight provinces, following the successful establishment of cross-provincial links between Zhejiang and Heilongjiang earlier this year.

The intention behind the cloud network is to streamline leather market operations and therefore reduce the time spent on related activities (such as travel), which, it is hoped, will in turn help to increase the efficiency of the Chinese leather industry, overall.

Cloud-based recognition of electronic certificates, licences and other examples of intellectual property are one aspect of this. Another, more general, element is to broaden professional networks and deepen social and economic interactions between parties based across the country via a supervised, online process.

Joint law enforcement and the construction of a standardised market credit system will further efforts to improve conditions for business owners and entrepreneurs. The cloud will also enable cross-regional quality inspection of leather products and allow for the “smooth” flow of data, technology and capital, local media said.

Through the creation of such a network, China hopes to move towards a modern, national and unified professional leather market.
