Full-year growth for China’s economy, in spite of covid-19

18/01/2021

China’s economy grew by 2.3% in 2020, according to official data released on January 18. Because of covid-19, it is highly likely that China’s will be the only major economy in the world to have grown last year.

Reuters said swift local action to control coronavirus outbreaks in China, government stimulus packages and wider demand for Chinese-made goods when production in other parts of the world closed down had all helped to “fire up momentum”.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, growth in the fourth quarter was 6.5% year on year, which followed a figure of 4.9% in the third quarter. These results more than made up for the contraction of 6.8% that China registered in the first three months of the year.
