Hermès brand opens in Chengdu

Hermès-backed Chinese luxury house, Shang Xia (meaning ‘as above, as below’), opened a flagship store in Chengdu - its first in southwestern China - in November.

The 450 square-metres space, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is situated in Chengdu’s retail-led Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li development.

Mr Kuma’s approach to the store’s design utilised bamboo stems as a central element, creating an “urban forest”, as Shang Xia described it, inside the store.

Shang Xia CEO and artistic director, Jiang Qiong Er (pictured, centre), was in attendance at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
