Sustainability ‘a decisive factor’ for VW group
German automotive group Volkswagen introduced a new worldwide sustainability rating system for its suppliers on July 1. The company said it would allow it to assess the sustainability conduct of its supply chain partners, highlighting areas such as human rights, environmental protection and corruption.

As part of this new system, suppliers must first provide a self-assessment of their sustainability conduct by completing a questionnaire. They must also supply documents supporting their responses. All information will then by checked by what Volkswagen calls “qualified third parties”. On-site checks will be carried out should the group have any doubts. Any misconduct could lead to a supplier being excluded from the award of contracts.

The new sustainability requirements are described in Volkswagen’s new ‘Code of Conduct for Business Partners’. Among the areas it covers are respect for human rights, compliance with occupational health and safety, environmental protection and the fight against corruption.

In the future, the group plans to expand the Sustainability Rating system to also cover CO2 emissions in the supply chain.

Dr Stefan Sommer, VW board member in charge of components and procurement, said of these new standards: "We are convinced that a sustainable supplier network is a guarantee of long-term corporate success. Sustainability is becoming a decisive business factor".
