VW led the way in global automotive sales in 2018
Volkswagen was the number one automotive manufacturer in 2018 in terms of units sold. The German group, whose brands include Audi, Seat and Porsche, delivered more than 10.8 million vehicles, an increase of 0.9% compared to the previous year.

This put it out in front of Japanese company Toyota, which delivered 10.6 million vehicles. This figure represents growth of 2% compared to 2017. They were the only two manufacturers to break the ten-million mark.

The two leading US carmakers, General Motors and the Ford Motor Company, both recorded a decrease in sales during 2018. During the 12 months, General Motors delivered 8.4 million vehicles, a drop of 12.7% year-on-year. Ford’s sales were down 9% to 6 million vehicles.

Another company that experienced a decline in sales was Japan’s Nissan group which sold 5.7 million cars, down 2.8% year-on-year.

French group Renault, which is in a strategic alliance with Nissan fellow Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi, saw its sales increase 3.2% during the year to 3.9 million vehicles.

Two premium German automobile groups, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, both delivered more than 2 million vehicles in 2018.
