He was selected by a high-level jury featuring artistic directors from different LVMH maisons, including Jonathan Anderson (Loewe), Maria Grazia Chiuri (Dior), Nicolas Ghesquière (Louis Vuitton), Marc Jacobs (Marc Jacobs) and Karl Lagerfeld (Fendi).
Mr Ino receives a grant of €300,000 and a year-long mentorship from the LVMH group.
Explaining the decision, Delphine Arnault, vice president of Louis Vuitton and a member of the jury, said: “We were impressed by the contemporary resourcefulness that instils Masayuki Ino’s designs with an urban touch infused with fresh poetry.”
The jury awarded a special prize to Rok Hwang. He will also take part in a year-long mentorship programme with LVMH as well as receiving a grant of €150,000.
Three young graduates from fashion schools were also recognised. Each one will join an LVMH maison for one year and will receive €10,000. They are:
• Archie M. Alled-Martinez, a graduate from Central Saint Martins, who joins Givenchy;
• Maya Chantout, a graduate from the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, who joins Céline;
• Scylia Chevaux, a graduate from the Accademia Costume & Moda, who joins Louis Vuitton
Ms Arnault revealed that over 1,300 young designers from more than 90 countries competed for these prizes. She said this number is “evidence of the international scope of the event”.
