Can this gadget tell you if your handbag is fake?
A New York startup claims to have technology capable of identifying counterfeit luxury accessories more accurately than a human expert can.

The company, Entrupy, was founded in 2012 and launched the product verification technology last year. It consists of a handheld camera that allows anyone with a smartphone to check the authenticity of a luxury product within minutes.

It works by magnifying the object 260 times. This allows features that would not be picked up by the human eye, such as misshapen stamp marks or gaps in the leather grain, to be detected.

The products can be checked against Entrupy’s database of tens of millions of photographs from around 30,000 different handbags and wallets. The software is capable of learning new features as clients upload new pictures.

Entrupy has said the accuracy of its technology is better than 98% for 11 brands, including Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci. It has no relationships with any of the fashion brands whose products it authenticates.

The authentication device can be leased from the company for an initial fee of $299. So far, around 160 businesses including wholesalers and online retailers have signed up to use it.

Entrupy secured $2.6 million in investment in July from two Tokyo-based technology companies. It is using this money to design a faster and more portable device and to add more brands to its database.
