Part of Kering lawsuit against Alibaba dismissed

A US judge has dismissed part of a lawsuit filed by luxury fashion house Kering against Chinese online shopping site Alibaba.

The lawsuit accused Alibaba and 14 other companies of promoting the sale of counterfeit goods. Kering alleged that the companies formed a joint enterprise to profit from the sale of counterfeit branded items, including luxury goods.

The judge dismissed the claim, saying Kering was unable to back up its claim with facts. He added that the existence of the joint enterprise was not proved under federal racketeering law as there was no evidence that the companies were aware of each other.

The ruling does not affect the trademark-related claims that the same lawsuit brought against Alibaba. A decision on this part of the case will be made at a later date.
