Kering signs up to emissions initiative

Kering has been verified and approved by the Science Based Target (SBT) initiative, becoming the first luxury group to have achieved this, the company has announced.

The SBT is a joint initiative from the Carbon Disclosure Project, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the WWF. It aims to support companies in establishing science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, which will contribute to global efforts to ensure global warming doesn’t exceed 2°C by 2050.

Kering has committed to reducing direct emissions by 50% by 2050, as well as making a parallel commitment to reduce indirect emissions from transportation, distribution, business flights, and fuel and energy by the same percentage. It also aims to reduce emissions from purchased goods and services by 40%.

“Contributing to combating climate change and respecting planetary boundaries in the way we do business is a priority for us,” said Marie-Claire Daveu, Kering’s chief sustainability officer.

Kering’s commitment to the SBT initiative will form part of the next phase of its sustainability strategy, which is due to be unveiled in January 2017.
