“Groundbreaking” agreement between Kering and Alibaba

04/08/2017
Luxury group Kering and Chinese online shopping site Alibaba have agreed to cooperate in their efforts to fight the sale of counterfeit products.

The groups have established a joint task force to find and take action against those selling fake Kering products. This includes both online and offline sales. Kering said it will use Alibaba’s “advanced technology capabilities” as part of this partnership.

Kering added: “This agreement reflects the parties’ firm belief that taking proactive measures and using advanced technology will help law enforcement bodies and other relevant authorities address the challenges of intellectual property infringement.”

It marks a remarkable turnaround in the relationship between Kering and Alibaba, which was previously a difficult one. In May 2015, Kering-owned Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent were among several brands that sued Alibaba for “knowingly making it possible” for counterfeits to sell goods through its platform. A US judge dismissed part of this lawsuit in August 2016, explaining that Kering had failed to provide evidence to support this claim.

As part of this new agreement, Kering said it has agreed to dismiss the lawsuit it filed against Alibaba.
