Daimler announces voluntary recall of some diesel vehicles

20/07/2017
Daimler has said it will invest €220 million to improve the diesel emissions of three million Mercedes-Benz vehicles, building on a “voluntary service action” that was already in place.

The company explained that this step is not a recall issued by regulators. It has been offering the same software update for its compact-class and V-class vehicles.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management of Daimler and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said this additional measure has been taken “to reassure drivers of diesel cars and to strengthen confidence in diesel technology”.

In its announcement, Daimler stressed that it believes diesel engines still have a place in the automotive market. It said it had invested €3 billion to build a new generation of diesel engines “whose exemplary emissions have been confirmed by measurements carried out by independent institutes”.
