MLA expects drop in slaughter in 2017

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has released its projections for the Australian Cattle Industry during 2017 and beyond.

The organisation’s quarterly report said that the country’s cattle market has been rejuvenated by recent rainfall. This will ensure that cattle prices will remain higher year-on-year during the first six months of 2017. It cautioned, however, that a slowly growing herd is likely to result in lower prices towards the end of 2017.

It also said it expects cattle slaughter in Australia to be at 7.1 million head in 2017, down 3% compared to last year. This negative statistic will be offset by much heavier carcasses, which will mean only a 1% year-on-year drop in beef and veal production.
