Australia calculates value of red meat and livestock sectors

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), the levy-funded body that works to promote the country’s red meat and livestock sectors, has published its annual report for 2015-2016. The report covers the period from July 2015 to June 2016.

“This past year has been a relatively good one for much of the Australian red meat and livestock industry,” said MLA chair, Dr Michele Roberts, in comments published at the start of the report. It’s not just the markets that have provided relief for many livestock producers. The season has also brought much-needed rain across many production areas.”

She explained that the total value of the red meat and livestock industry (including domestic and red meat and live export markets) in 2015-16 was estimated at $22.9 billion (a little under US$17 billion), just 0.9% lower than 2014-15. “Lamb, beef and goat meat markets all contributed to this remarkable result,” Dr Robers said.

At the start of 2015-2016, Australia’s cattle herd was 27.4 million head. In the course of 2015-2016, total slaughter was around 8 million head.
