26/01/2017
The levy-funded body that works to promote livestock and red meat in Australia Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), has said it expects the country’s cattle herd to grow in 2017, for the first time in three years.

MLA projections suggest growth of 3% in the course of 2017 to reach 26.9 million head of cattle.

Ben Thomas, the organisation’s market information manager, said on announcing the projections that this change is likely to kick in during the second half of this year, with the first six months continuing on the same track as 2016, with tight supplies.

With restocking taking place, MLA has projected slaughter of 7.1 million head of cattle in Australia this year, a 3% decline year on year.
