Coach to withdraw its products from some department stores

Leathergoods brand Coach is to pull its handbags and leathergoods out of approximately 250 department stores in North America as it feels discounting has hurt its reputation with shoppers.

“While we understand that customers may use department stores for trial and shopping across brands, the high level of promotional impressions created negatively impacts our long-term brand health,” said Coach CEO, Victor Luis, during a presentation of the brand’s financial results.

He added that it created confusion across channels and made it difficult for Coach to persuade shoppers to spend more on a similar bag at its own stores or e-commerce channels. The company will also reduce the markdowns that department stores can put on its products.

There are currently roughly 1,000 wholesale locations where Coach sells its goods across the US and Canada, including at Macy’s and Nordstrom stores.
