New Coach store has resident leather craftsman

Leathergoods brand Coach has officially opened its newest flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York City, US.

The opening was timed to coincide with the brand’s 75th anniversary year, with Coach describing the “unique retail concept” as a “defining moment” in its history.

The store, which is known as Coach House, was designed by Coach creative director Stuart Vevers. It features blackened steel, a concrete staircase and a glass enclosed, vintage-inspired elevator.

Occupying the central part of the store is a 12-foot dinosaur sculpture made entirely from Coach bags and hardware.

“With Coach House, we are celebrating our New York heritage and 75-year history of craftsmanship,” said Victor Luis, CEO of Coach.

Coach House will have two features that the brand says speak to its “heritage of leather craftmanship and innovative design”.

The first allows customers to create a bespoke Rogue bag, selecting from nine aspects of customisation, which Coach says gives over one million possible combinations.

It will also have an in-house workshop, which will offer expanded services including special monogramming. These will be carried out by a resident master leather craftsman with 30 years of experience at Coach.

The Stuart Weitzman footwear brand, which Coach acquired in January 2015, has taken up residence in the adjacent store.
