Namibia’s FMD outbreak hits hide trading

22/12/2015
A hide and meat trader in Namibia has told local press how the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the country has decimated revenues this year.

Before the outbreak, Eva Kuunasha salted the hides and then sold them to a tannery in Ondangwa, but that "but that has not been happening”.

The hides are worth more to the locals than the meat, at about $20 each, but they have been left to rot as transportation has been banned.

However, measures to prevent the spread of the disease appear to be working: there has not been a new case since July and the country will be declared FMD free on January 22 if this continues to be the case.
