Packer says Paraguay has unofficial green light for beef exports to EU

16/03/2015
Packer industry representatives in Paraguay have said the European Union is ready to take beef exports from the South American country again. Exports of beef from Paraguay were stopped after  an outbreak of foot and mouth disease there in September 2011.

Edwin Reimer, president of a packer group called Cooperativa Neuland, played host to Paraguay’s president, Horacio Cartes, for the opening of an extension at an abattoir in the south-western town of Villa Hayes, close to the border with Argentina, on March 10. Speaking to media on the day, he said: “Europe has confirmed, unofficially, that it will open its market to beef exports from Paraguay again. All that has to happen now is for our abattoirs to undergo an inspection.”
