Sudan considers Leather Bill

The Sudanese government has reviewed recommendations for developing the country’s leather sector that include establishing a leather zone, attracting foreign investment and adopting a Leather Bill for 2015.

Sudan has more than 100 million head of cattle and the Ministry of Industry is looking to achieve added value in all stages of production.

The country has 27 tanneries, 180 slaughterhouses and 21 footwear and leathergoods factories.

The director of White Nile Tannery, Dr Mohamed Omer Rifai, said his tannery had recently been updated with new machinery and that its leather meets export requirements.
