Saudi Arabia imports livestock for Eid
Saudi Arabia will import more than two million live animals to meet demand and to keep prices stable during Islamic festival Eid al-Adha, also known as Feast of the Sacrifice. The festival will fall between October 14 and October 15 this year.
As well as providing animals for the festival, the imports will also offer local tanners a large volume of additional raw material for the production of finished leather and leathergoods.
Suleiman Al-Jabri, chairman of the Livestock Committee at the Jeddah Chamber
of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), revealed that livestock from Somalia and Sudan started to arrive at the Jeddah Islamic Port in early September and that approximately 600,000 animals had already been shipped.
"The local ministry facilitated import procedures, opened new areas for import and provided all kinds of support,” he explained. “Livestock prices have risen significantly due to higher prices in exporting countries. Our local market depends on imports to cover 75% of local demand."
