China imported $1.02 billion worth of finished and semi-finished leather in 2013, according to the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) – 6.6% higher than the previous year.

In terms of volume, the 240,000 tonnes was 4.7% higher than last year – meaning there are “opportunities” for overseas tanners, according to organisers of the All China Leather Exhibition. “Rising prices and steady demand equal handsome profits and an improved bottom line for enterprising tanneries producing quality leather for their China clients,” they said.

Exports of finished and semi-finished leather rose to 9,000 tons with a value of $100 million (+16% and 24.2% respectively). Domestic production of light leather fell 23.2% in 2013.

“Given the recovery of developed economies and the reform of China’s leather industry, we project the industry will continue to grow steadily in the second half of 2014,” said the CLIA. “Although import and export volumes might be subject to slight fluctuations due to market factors, we believe such fluctuations will not be too strong.”
