Hides neglected in Kenya due to low value

Livestock and Fisheries principal secretary Khadijah Kassachoon said 80% of Kenyans wear imported shoes even though the country has enough hides and skins to sustain the leather industry.
“Poor handling of hides and skins during the flaying process causes substantial damage that continues to hurt the industry," she said.
The government has supplied dehiders to abattoirs and is embarking on a programme to promote the value of the skins at farm level. It says this should improve the welfare of animals, lead to higher-quality leather, and allow it to better compete with neighbouring Ethiopia in terms of leather exports.
