Outgoing Kenyan Leather Council boss to build tannery

Amos Ngonjo has stepped down as chairman of the Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) and in his leaving speech called for the government to do more to protect the industry.

He said revenue is lost through tax evasion and corruption, with containers of hides being moved through Mombasa without the correct documentation.

He is chairman of Kenya Traders and Tanners Association, and said he will remain active in the sector as he plans to build a tannery and finished goods factory.

New KLDC chairman Titus Ibui urged colleges and universities to recruit and train leather technicians to help boost the sector.
