KLDC: Kenya can be “major player” in leather sector

29/06/2012

According to the Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC), the country’s leather sector could be worth $78 billion. Around 60% of this will come from the leather footwear segment.

Established in 2011, the KLDC’s role is to improve livestock size and breed, to streamline product development and to promote market expansion. The priority is on exporting finished leather and leathergoods rather than raw hides or wet blue.

CEO Mwinyihija Mwinyikione said: "Our dream of having a regulatory body for the sector has come to pass. The council will address all the underlying issues to growth and competitiveness of the industry.

"There is no reason why Kenya cannot be a major player."
