Kenya: state policy works as leather exports increase in value

10/12/2012
The value of Kenya’s leather exports are projected to hit $116 million for 2012, according to the Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC), an increase of nearly 50% compared to the figure for 2011. Chief executive, Dr Mwinyikione Mwinyihija, said recently that government measures to encourage operators in Kenya to add as much value to raw material as possible on home soil before export had made a big difference.

Kenya’s tanneries currently process 8.5 million small skins and 1.5 million cattle hides every year. According to the KLDC, there are also possibilities in exotic leather, fish and rabbit skins.
