The 10 companies, mainly from around Novo Hamburgo in the south of Brazil, close to many of the country’s tanneries, attended the Milan-based show as part of a world tour which will take in the US and potentially Russia, and is funded by export association Apex and Abicav.
Brasil by Bags was launched at the Couromoda leather event in Brazil in January to promote the country’s craftsmanship and finished products.
One of the highlights was Maria Luzia (pictured), a fish leather brand that uses skins of pirarucu, which have in recent years become more popular with designers and consumers.
Brasil by Bags project manager Paulo Kieling said: “Around three years ago the Brazilian government ruled that the fish is a good source of protein so they created fish farms, so we are seeing increased used of this fish leather. There are now many tanneries are working with these skins.”
The goal is that by the end of this year, Brazilian leathergoods exports will exceed $100 million, double that of 2013, according to a statement.
