New York attorney general sues JBS USA

New York’s attorney general is suing meat and tannery group JBS’s US division, accusing it of misleading the public about its impact on the environment.

State attorney General Letitia James said JBS USA has claimed that it will achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, despite plans to increase production.

She said: “As families continue to face the daily impacts of the climate crisis, they are willing to spend more of their hard-earned money on products from brands that are better for the environment.

“When companies falsely advertise their commitment to sustainability, they are misleading consumers and endangering our planet.”

In a statement, JBS said it disagreed with the lawsuit. It also pledged to continue partnering with farmers, ranchers and others toward a "more sustainable future for agriculture" that uses fewer resources and reduces its environmental impact.
