Senior members of the Tuscan tanning sector attended Ecomondo, a trade fair in Rimini, where the district was held up as a reference for responsible industrial systems.

Promoted by tanners’ association UNIC, an event on November 7 highlighted tanneries' use of EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme), a European Commission-driven tool that promotes the sharing of environmental best practice.

Professor Fabio Iraldo, of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, stated how the tanneries’ initiatives had preceded market requirements.

Tuscan tanners’ association Associazione Conciatori and the Consortium of Tanners of Ponte a Egola shared results and objectives linked to EMAS and called for other businesses to take part in the scheme.
