Tuscany leads in Made in Italy

The leather goods sector remains a driving force for the Italian economy and keeps Tuscany at its beating heart, reported La Nazione.

Data presented at the 'state of the industry conference' on October 17 revealed that Tuscany accounts for 38% of Italy's foreign turnover and exports goods worth €2.73 billion. Despite a decline in exports to Switzerland, Tuscany's exports to France, China, the USA, and Japan performed well.

The leather goods industry is a pillar of Made in Italy and generated record exports between 2021 and 2022, marking a growth of 15%.  Exports worth €80 billion were recorded in 2022, €10 billion of which was generated by leather goods. Interim figures show growth of 6% for the first six months of 2023, with €5.6 billion.

The goal of the 'state of the industry', according to Claudia Sequi, president of Assopellettieri, is "to turn the spotlight on the challenges of the sector, starting with training, given that in the next five years 15-20 thousand employees will be needed between new entries and replacements of retirements." The event was attended by regional and city institutions and many key players in the sector, including the CEO of Dolce & Gabana Alfonso Dolce.
