Milestone for Gruppo Mastrotto as it achieves carbon neutrality
Italian tannery group Gruppo Mastrotto has announced all leathers passing through its logistics hub, Gruppo Mastrotto Express, can be labelled carbon neutral after a series of investments.
The hub in Arzignano, which it described as “the Amazon of sustainable leather”, has more than 1,500 colours in stock and can ship orders within 48 hours.
The group has reduced or offset both Scope 1 emissions - those generated directly by assets owned by the company - and Scope 2 emissions - which include emissions indirectly generated through the type of energy used.
It invested in solar panels, lowered water consumption, reduced chemicals, invested in more efficient technology and now buys only electricity from renewable sources.
A survey on emissions revealed the measures did not fully eliminate the potential impact on global warming, so it joined United Nations emission offset programmes in India and Brazil, which focus on wind and water power and biomass cogeneration (recovery of husk, a by-product of rice processing).
Group president Chiara Mastrotto said: “This new milestone represents a fundamental step in our sustainability journey, a commitment towards sustainability that we have undertaken many years ago and that we painstakingly promote among our clients too. We are happy to announce it just a few days before World Environment Day, an event that every year reminds us how necessary and urgent it is for each of us to commit to making this world ever more sustainable.
“This extraordinary result was made possible thanks to dedication, excellent teamwork and significant investments and represents for us a further impulse to continue walking the path to sustainability with determination. Our sustainability journey does not stop here.”
