Growth prospects for Mauritius’ leather sector

Mauritius’ Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Soomilduth Bholah, has suggested the leather sector could become one of the “pillars of the economy” if more companies were set up and joint ventures with overseas companies established.

He praised a group of three leather-focused companies during a visit to at Filao Group in Leather Land, in Riche Terre, on the northwest coast.

The companies - Filao Limitée, Cover Tech International and Longchamp Mauritius – employ 700 and export to countries including the US, Switzerland and Hong Kong.

Marday Venkatasamy, managing director of Filao, which makes leathergoods and bracelets for the luxury market, praised his dedicated and skilled staff, adding that orders were continuously increasing.
