Longchamp still looking to recruit new artisans in France

Luxury leathergoods brand Longchamp has said it is still seeking recruits at its workshop in Château-Gontier in the west of France.

In the face of growth in its business of around 75% in the last three years, the company began recruiting unskilled workers to train itself in 2011. Local people have spent months at the Longchamp factory in Château-Gontier learning to become a new generation of leather artisans.

“We are always looking for new recruits,” production director, David Burgel, recently told local media. “Our facility at Château-Gontier is working as an artisan workshop in which we can help people perfect the skills they already have or even train from scratch young people with no experience.”

Longchamp has set up production facilities overseas in recent years, in Tunisia, Mauritius and Romania. Mr Burgel said the idea behind these factories was to be able to supply entry-level bags and small leathergoods to the market. But he said the brand remains totally committed to maintaining its operations in France, keeping its workforce there, continuing to pass on French savoir-faire and to use French raw materials.
