Chief execs of Kering and LVMH make HBR’s top 100 list

Harvard Business Review (HBR) set out its list of this year’s 100 Best Performing CEOs, in the publication’s November-December issue. Two out of the top ten CEOs were from the luxury sector, with Kering’s François-Henri Pinault ranked third and LVMH’s Bernard Arnaut (who last year held third) ranked tenth.

Rankings for this list are determined by performance measures over a chief executive’s entire tenure. For the men and women on this list, said HBR, such metrics tend to stay consistent and may explain why 65 of last year’s CEOs reappeared on this year’s list.

In 2015, financial performance was no longer the only major metric considered; environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings began to account for 20% of each CEO’s final ranking. This year, that share increased to 30% which, as HBR explained, reflects the fact that increasing numbers of  funds and individuals now focus on more than bottom-line metrics when making investment decisions. (One casualty of this change in weighting: Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.)
