Stahl upgrades wastewater facilities at Suzhou plant

Leather chemicals manufacturers has offered details about the improvements it has made to the wastewater facilities at the production plant it operates in Suzhou, China.

This has included using self-generated energy to keep the process temperatures of its bio-treatment system above 15 degrees Celsius. Stahl has said this means that during the winter, no additional energy consumption is required to sustain bacterial activity.

The company has also created a closed system at its effluent treatment plant (ETP) there in an effort to prevent the release of unpleasant odours in the neighbouring area. ETP exhaust is now collected and passes through an air treatment system before it is discharged.

In addition, upgrades have been made to how waste is physically treated, allowing moisture in the resulting sludge cake to be reduced by up to 25%. This decreases the volume of waste that needs to be disposed of, which brings a significant reduction in costs.

The improvements in Suzhou are the latest phase of Stahl’s efforts to make its operations more environmentally responsible. It has made similar enhancements in terms of power generation at its manufacturing site in Brazil.
