It adds that after a difficult period for leather business in the country, primarily due to political and cultural issues related to cow slaughter, the Indian government is trying to demonstrate more support for the sector. This includes greater investment in wastewater treatment facilities, improved labour conditions and new leather clusters.
The report explains: “If well managed and controlled, the leather industry in India has a bright future, especially in light of general policy changes in China. This is opening many doors for the leather pipeline and production in the subcontinent.”
It says visitors and exhibitors at the recent India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai (February 1-3) were “reasonably satisfied” with the results of the show.
The next important trade events on the calendar are the Lineapelle fair in Milan (February 20-22) and the APLF exhibition in Hong Kong (March 14-16), two events the Leather Pipeline report says will offer good insight into what the leather industry can expect for the rest of 2018.
