Indian tanners to meet raw materials suppliers in Chennai

India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has added a new component to the India International Leather Fair, which will take place in Chennai at the start of February.

On the first full day of the exhibition, February 1, Indian tanners will have the chance to hold talks with overseas suppliers of raw hides and skins, wet blue and crust at a formal raw materials sourcing meeting that CLE is setting up for the first time at the Chennai event.

Between 25 and 30 raw material suppliers are scheduled to take part, presenting hides and skins from a range of origins including Brazil, the US, Australia, Argentina and several African countries.

India’s import of raw and semi-processed hides and skins has been increasing, with the value of these imports increasing from almost $475 million in financial year 2010-2011 to $610 million in 2016-2017.

This indicates a rise of almost 30% over a period during which some Indian states have placed a ban on cattle slaughter, affecting the availability to tanners of local raw material.
