The guest of honour at the ceremony was India’s Minister of Commerce & Industry, Suresh Prabhu. In a passionate address, he said the leather industry has a “vital role” to play in the growth and development of the country’s economy.
In his opening comments, Deepak Kumar, executive director of the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), which along with the Council for Leather Exports organises the event, said around 500 companies will exhibit at this year’s IILF, its 33rd edition.
As well as those from India, there will be 160 companies from more than 22 countries in attendance. He highlighted that China, Germany, France, Italy and Brazil will have their own pavilions at the exhibition.
Mr Kumar thanked Mr Prabhu for attending the inauguration, especially in light of the Indian government publishing its latest budget on February 1. He said the minister’s presence is testament to the central government’s commitment to the leather industry.
