05/08/2016
Representatives of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) have expressed concerns over the decline in exports of leather and leather products, according to local media reports.

The PTA members said that exports of Pakistan’s leather and leathergoods products declined 26% between July 2015 and June 2016.

Agha Saiddain, a former chairman of the PTA, said that those within the leather industry have expressed their concerns about the situation to the government and ministry of commerce, adding that those who depend on leather exports were in need of urgent help. He urged the government to reduce customs duty on the import of raw hides and skins to 3%.

By his estimations, the leather industry contributes Rs 20 billion ($1.9 billion) to Pakistan’s economy and directly employs more than 250,000 people.
