Decline in exports for Pakistan’s leather sector

Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Statistics has said exports by leather-sector companies in the first nine months of the current financial year have fallen by 20% year on year.

In the period from July 2015 to March 2016, the leather industry earned export revenues of $740 million, compared to more than $925 million during the same period in the previous financial year.

Tanners exported just over 12 million square-metres of leather over the period, earning $267 million. These figures represents declines of 25% in volume and 27% in value.

For their part, footwear manufacturers exported 9.5 million pairs of shoes over the period, bringing in export revenues of almost $80 million; leather shoes contributed amost $65 million towards this.
