A partnership between the Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and The University of Queensland (UQ) is aiming to give a boost to Australia’s northern beef cattle industry. The Northern Beef Collaborative Partnership will see millions of dollars injected into a research and development programme designed to deliver “significant productivity gains” for producers in the region.

Richard Norton, MLA managing director, said the collaboration between the MLA Donor Company (MDC) and UQ will be worth up to A$8 million per year for a minimum of three years. The three main areas targeted will be:

•Animal nutrition, supplementation and feedbase
•Cattle health and welfare
•Reproduction efficiency and management

“Investments of this calibre are vital to the ongoing prosperity of northern beef producers,” Mr Norton said.

“Collaboration between researchers and industry is essential if we are to translate world-class research into achievable, practical solutions that benefit industry, society and the environment,” added Professor Peter Hoj, UQ vice-chancellor and president.
